$500M LA Metro Universal Studios Ped. Bridge & Station

For years, Metro and NBC Universal have been working towards a shared goal of creating a safe and convenient path for pedestrians to travel between the Universal Studios Theme Park and the Universal City Red Line Station. The Universal City Station Pedestrian Bridge is the realization of this long-standing objective. The L-shaped, 400-foot bridge spans over Lankershim Boulevard and Universal Hollywood Drive, serving as a striking entryway to the theme park and offering easy access to three corners of the busy intersection.

A Path for Pedestrian Travel

This unique bridge features a visually light, transparent design with an exposed V-section steel through-truss supported by four tubular steel columns. Its maximum span of almost 150 feet across Lankershim Boulevard required extensive 3-D dynamic modeling to ensure its resilience against seismic, wind, vehicle collision, and pedestrian loading. The structure incorporates steel buckling-restrained braced frames in the three elevator shafts and the middle staircase to withstand wind and seismic forces.

With its roofless design, the Universal City Station Pedestrian Bridge not only provides a grade-separated path for pedestrians, but it also serves as a gateway to the Universal Studios theme park. The bridge offers a safe and convenient option for people to travel in the area around the Metro Rail's Red Line Station and the Universal Studios Shuttle Stop, creating a more accessible and inviting pedestrian environment.
